Last Epoch Paladin

Quick Answer

Paladin is a Sentinel mastery with healing, party buffs and several damage routes. Choose one main skill, then match its equipment, mana and defensive requirements instead of mixing incompatible scaling plans.

On this page

The Last Epoch Paladin is a Sentinel mastery built around healing, party buffs, fire or lightning damage, and defenses that can benefit from block. In Season 5, the clearest starting choices are Radiant Lance for a configurable spell build, Javelin for long-range physical throwing damage, or Judgement for fire damage over time through Consecrated Ground.

Choose the damage skill first, then make every other slot support its scaling and resource needs. Radiant Lance's shield, mana, ailment and Reliquary routes do not want the same equipment. Javelin has an established endgame setup but depends on a specific unique weapon. Judgement's ground damage scales differently from its melee hit, and older guides may no longer reflect its Season 5 node changes.

This guide reflects Season 5 and hotfix 1.5.2.1.

A complete configuration to follow after choosing Paladin

For a reproducible current spell route, use the separate lightning Radiant Lance / Smite guide. It follows BlueBeyond's direct-cast lightning Monolith configuration, with the same author's planner. This class page helps choose a route; it is not a second five-skill allocation to combine with that planner.

Before copying that buildRequirement or boundary
Full damage engineSpirit Xylem and Devotion; mana spending with Radiant Lance and recovery with direct Smite
Earlier equipmentThe author permits wand + catalyst before the staff, but those items lack its full defensive effects
Default skill versus selected versionCloudless Sky removes the shield requirement and block scaling; do not retain shield-only offensive assumptions
Support behaviorHoly Aura and Symbols of Hope remain on the bar passively in the selected configuration; the generic active-Holy-Aura advice below is route-dependent
Performance claimsThe author's lightning Monolith result and separate fire bossing result belong to different configurations; neither is an independent wiki play-test

BlueBeyond's written configuration establishes these requirements. Use its linked page for exact nodes, blessings and resource troubleshooting. Effusive Oath's physical conversion and an Electrify Reliquary tree would require a different coherent package.

What the Paladin is good at

Paladin combines offense and sustain instead of separating them into unrelated systems. Holy Aura buffs both the Paladin and nearby allies, Smite damages an enemy while healing allies around its target, and Judgement creates ground that simultaneously hurts enemies and heals allies. Radiant Lance adds an aggressive lightning spell that can scale from block, mana, Attunement, ailments, or automated Reliquary casts.

StrengthWhat it means in playImportant limitation
Healing attached to useful skillsSmite and Judgement can restore health while contributing damageHealing does not replace the need to avoid dangerous attacks or build defenses
Strong self and party buffsHoly Aura passively grants 30% increased damage and 15% additional elemental resistance to you and nearby alliesIts active burst is temporary and should be saved for meaningful damage windows
Several viable damage identitiesLightning, fire, physical throwing, ailments, and damage over time all have supported routesMixing several routes usually leaves each one poorly scaled
Block-based spell scalingRadiant Lance gains 1% more damage per 1% uncapped block chance while using its normal shield behaviorCloudless Sky removes this block scaling and replaces it with maximum-mana scaling
Attunement synergyRadiant Lance gains increased damage, while Smite and Judgement gain damage and healing benefitsAttunement is valuable only when the selected skills and nodes actually use it

Holy Aura is the mastery’s universal support tool. It passively grants its bonuses while equipped, and activating it doubles those bonuses for four seconds. Its cooldown is ten seconds. Use the active effect before a boss damage window or a dangerous pack instead of pressing it automatically whenever it becomes available.

Choose one primary Paladin route

The most important build decision is not which five skills look thematic together. It is which skill will perform most of the damage. Use the following comparison to select a route before investing heavily in equipment.

RouteMain damage patternCore scalingEntry conditionBest fit
Radiant Lance with a shieldDirect lightning spell hits from a forward beam, targeted blast, or bothUncapped block chance, Attunement, cast speed, lightning modifiers, and spell damageSpend 15 points in the Paladin passive tree and equip a shieldPlayers who want an offensive caster with defensive scaling
Cloudless Sky Radiant LanceShieldless casting with mana-based damage scalingMaximum mana, Attunement, cast speed, and the chosen damage typeAllocate Cloudless Sky; the skill no longer requires a shieldPlayers who prefer a staff or another non-shield weapon setup
Golden Reliquary Radiant LancePlace Reliquaries that cast Radiant Lance indirectlyAttunement, cast speed, mana management, and the selected conversion or ailment routeAllocate Golden Reliquary and build around indirect castsPlayers who prefer placed, repeating damage rather than constant direct casting
JavelinLong-range physical throwing attacks in a barrageThrowing damage, reduced throwing mana cost, throwing attack speed, and skill levelsThe documented Season 5 endgame setup requires Sierpin’s Fractal TreePlayers who want ranged physical attacks and active aiming
JudgementA melee impact followed by persistent Consecrated GroundFire spell damage over time, healing effectiveness, Strength, and AttunementUnlock Judgement and sustain its mana and positioning requirementsPlayers who want a durable close-range fire build

Do not combine the final gear priorities from these routes. A block-heavy Radiant Lance shield is not automatically useful to Cloudless Sky, because Cloudless Sky removes the block-based damage bonus. Javelin wants throwing modifiers rather than spell damage. Judgement’s Consecrated Ground scales separately from its melee impact, so melee damage does not improve the ground effect and spell damage does not improve the melee hit.

Official Radiant Lance node definitions and Season 5 changes support the skill branches below. The authored Javelin route supports the specific Sierpin's Fractal Tree requirement; it does not establish that every Javelin leveling character needs that item.

Radiant Lance routes in Season 5

Radiant Lance is unlocked after spending 15 points in the Paladin passive tree. Its default form requires a shield, costs 24 mana, has no cooldown, and fires a lightning spell in front of the character. Added damage applies at 500% effectiveness, and each point of Attunement grants 4% increased damage. Its default scaling tags are Lightning, Spell, Area, and Attunement.

The default version gains 1% more damage for every 1% uncapped block chance. “Uncapped” matters: damage scaling can continue beyond the block chance shown as the practical defensive cap. This makes block chance an offensive stat as well as a defensive one for this route.

Build Radiant Lance around one of these coherent branches:

Direct shield caster

Keep the shield requirement and scale uncapped block chance. Piercing Light supplies lightning penetration, Lay Bare supports Shock and lightning resistance shred, and Resplendent Aegis adds lightning spell damage based on block effectiveness. Cloudburst changes the forward beam into a targeted blast and grants more damage. Exterminatus produces both a forward beam and a blast from the sky, allowing an enemy to be struck by both, but it adds 25 mana cost and applies 10% less cast speed.

This route is the cleanest match for the default skill. Watch mana consumption before committing to Exterminatus. A node that improves one cast is not an upgrade if the added cost forces long gaps between casts.

Mana-based shieldless caster

Cloudless Sky removes the shield requirement and the block-based damage bonus. In exchange, Radiant Lance deals 1% more damage per 25 maximum mana. This is a separate gearing plan, not a convenient way to remove the shield from a block build.

Maximum mana becomes both a damage resource and a casting reserve. Solace can improve mana efficiency, while Devotion adds endurance threshold during direct casts based on maximum mana. Judge the build by sustained boss casting rather than the tooltip from a full mana pool.

Reliquary caster

Golden Reliquary stops direct Radiant Lance casts. You instead place a Reliquary that casts the skill for six seconds. Its base cast rate is once every two seconds because it has 55% less cast speed. You begin with one maximum Reliquary and gain another for every 70 Attunement.

Reliquary casts are indirect but still use your character’s stats. Increase your own cast speed when you want them to fire more frequently. Nodes that explicitly require a direct cast should not be assumed to work through the Reliquary. This distinction affects effects such as Bestowed Radiance, Long Hands, Radiant Inquisition, and the doubled Divine Essence chance from Essence of Divinity.

Fire, void, and ailment conversions

Sunbeam converts the base lightning damage to fire, Electrify chance to Ignite chance, and relevant lightning shred or penetration effects to their fire versions. Abyssal Heresy instead converts the base damage to void, converts Electrify to Time Rot, converts lightning resistance shred to void resistance shred, and replaces Attunement scaling with added void spell damage from Vitality. Sunbeam has no effect when Abyssal Heresy is allocated.

Scathing Light applies a non-stacking lightning-and-fire damage-over-time ailment to bosses and rare enemies. Holy Prism then scales that ailment from Radiant Lance’s Electrify and Ignite chance. This is an ailment plan with its own priorities; it should not be treated as a free addition to every direct-hit setup.

Javelin as the established ranged alternative

The Season 5 Javelin configuration described here attacks from range with repeated physical projectiles. Its endgame version is not a gear-free starter: Sierpin’s Fractal Tree is the required unique because it makes Javelin split after hitting an enemy and improves area coverage. The item drops from Exiled Mages, which appear in Echoes, with Rune Prison Complex identified as a place to encounter many of them.

Core unique weapon for the Javelin Paladin setup.

Prioritize Throwing Damage, Throwing Damage and Reduced Mana Cost, and Throwing Attack Speed where the appropriate affixes are available. Razorfall adds two levels to Javelin and speeds up the build. Reduced mana cost on rings is especially important because rapid barrages cannot function if the character repeatedly empties the mana pool.

The documented skill loop is simple:

  1. Use Javelin as the main attack and aim the barrage from range.
  2. Maintain the buffs supplied by Shield Throw.
  3. Use Shield Rush for movement and defensive repositioning.
  4. Activate Holy Aura during important damage windows.
  5. Keep Symbols of Hope on the action bar for its passive benefits rather than manually activating it in this setup.

Siege Barrage and Spiked Bombardment create the repeated Javelin pattern. Keen Outlook rewards fighting at range, while Forceful Hurl rewards standing still during a boss damage window. These incentives compete with survival: move when an attack demands it, then re-establish distance and resume the barrage.

Judgement and Consecrated Ground

Judgement performs a melee attack and leaves Consecrated Ground for four seconds. Allies on the ground are healed for 50 health each second, while enemies take fire damage over time. The ground effect gains one spell damage per 5% increased healing effectiveness, which lets a healing stat contribute to offense.

The two parts of Judgement scale independently:

  • The melee hit uses melee damage and applies added melee damage at 350% effectiveness.
  • Consecrated Ground uses spell damage over time and applies added spell damage at 375% effectiveness per second.
  • Strength increases Judgement’s damage.
  • Attunement increases both its damage and healing effectiveness.

Decide whether the build is primarily about the melee hit or Consecrated Ground before choosing affixes. A fire damage-over-time Paladin should not spend valuable slots on melee modifiers that do nothing for its main source of damage.

Season 5 also changed Urgent Inquisition: it now applies 75% less healing and 25% less damage to Consecrated Ground. Any older setup using that node should be re-evaluated rather than copied unchanged.

Practical progression into a finished build

Begin with reliable Sentinel attacks instead of forcing an endgame interaction before it is available. One documented Sentinel leveling route starts with Vengeance and then moves to Hammer Throw for ranged clearing. Use ordinary rare equipment with relevant damage, health, resistances, and resource support while unlocking the Paladin tools required by the chosen route.

Follow this transition order:

  1. Select the final damage skill. Pick Radiant Lance, Javelin, or Judgement before crafting specialized equipment.
  2. Meet the real unlock or item condition. Radiant Lance requires 15 Paladin passive points. The documented Javelin endgame build needs Sierpin’s Fractal Tree. Do not dismantle a functional leveling setup before that condition is met.
  3. Specialize supporting skills by role. Reserve slots for movement, buffs, healing, or mana support instead of adding a second unrelated damage package.
  4. Fix mana during sustained combat. Test repeated casts against a durable target. One powerful cast followed by an empty resource bar is not a finished rotation.
  5. Add defensive layers before chasing luxury damage. Holy Aura and healing improve recovery, but they do not make positioning optional.
  6. Replace temporary gear one slot at a time. Preserve resistances and health when adding offensive uniques or specialized affixes.

Symbols of Hope now belongs at 35 points invested in the Paladin tree, rather than its older 15-point position. This Season 5 change can make old leveling plans appear to be missing a skill. Continue with the working leveling bar until the current requirement is met.

Common Paladin build mistakes

  • Following an old passive-tree screenshot exactly. Season 5 moved Symbols of Hope and changed several skill nodes. Verify that the current in-game tree matches the guide before spending around a missing interaction.
  • Scaling the wrong half of Judgement. Melee damage improves the impact, while spell damage improves Consecrated Ground. Choose the half that is intended to carry the build.
  • Taking Cloudless Sky while continuing to stack block for damage. The node removes Radiant Lance’s block-based damage scaling and replaces it with maximum-mana scaling.
  • Treating indirect Reliquary casts as direct casts. Golden Reliquary uses your stats, but effects explicitly requiring a direct cast are a separate condition.
  • Adding Exterminatus without retesting mana. Its additional 25 mana cost can change an otherwise sustainable skill into a burst-only setup.
  • Starting the finished Javelin setup without its required weapon. Keep a functional leveling build until Sierpin’s Fractal Tree drops.
  • Using Holy Aura’s active effect without a purpose. Its doubled bonuses last four seconds, so align them with a boss opening or dangerous encounter.
  • Calling healing a complete defense plan. Healing helps recover after damage; it does not prevent a lethal hit or compensate for standing in a telegraphed attack.

A finished Paladin should have one obvious damage engine, a repeatable resource loop, a movement answer, and defenses that remain intact after equipping its required uniques. If an upgrade improves the tooltip but breaks any of those four parts, it is not yet an upgrade.
