Last Epoch has 16 quests that can award Idol Slot progress, but you do not need to complete all 16. Complete any eight qualifying quest rewards to reach the maximum, giving your character 20 usable Idol Grid squares.
The important distinction is that 20 refers to grid squares, not the number of quests. Once the Idol Slot reward counter reaches its maximum, the remaining eligible quests stop adding more space. This lets you choose between ordinary campaign quests and the three dungeon-related alternatives: Lightless Arbor, Soulfire Bastion, and Temporal Sanctum.
Monolith progress, character level, and ordinary dungeon runs do not replace these rewards. If you entered the Monolith of Fate early or skipped large parts of the campaign, return to the campaign and complete enough of the listed quests.
The idol-slot unlock rules
The Idol Grid is the special equipment area on the right side of your inventory. Idols placed there provide their listed effects; Idols sitting in your ordinary inventory do not. Unlocking more squares allows you to fit larger Idols or combine more small ones.
Keep these rules in mind while planning your route:
- The maximum reward expands the grid to 20 usable squares.
- There are 16 possible quests that contribute toward that maximum.
- You need eight qualifying quest rewards, not all 16 quests.
- The list includes three main quests, ten ordinary side quests, and three dungeon quests.
- A main-story-only run is not enough because only three main quests award Idol Slot progress.
- Dungeon quests are alternatives, not additional space beyond the cap.
- Completing unrelated quests does not advance the Idol Slot reward counter.
- Once the counter is full, finishing another quest from the list does not unlock a twenty-first square.
This system is character progression rather than account-wide campaign completion. When checking a character that used a shortened route, judge its progress from that character's World Map counter and completed quest log.
The complete Last Epoch idol slot quest list
The following table contains all 16 current choices. Main quests are part of the normal story path. Side and dungeon quests must be deliberately included if you want to reach the cap without finishing every chapter activity.
| Chapter | Quest | Starting area | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chapter 2 — The Ruined Future | The Void Assault | Last Refuge Outskirts | Main quest |
| Chapter 3 — Seeking the Last Shard | An Ancient Hunt | The Council Chambers | Side quest |
| Chapter 3 — Seeking the Last Shard | Lightless Arbor | Lightless Arbor | Dungeon quest |
| Chapter 4 — The Outcasts and the Empire | The Admiral's Dreadnought | The Risen Lake | Main quest |
| Chapter 4 — The Outcasts and the Empire | The Corrupted Lake | The Corrupted Lake | Side quest |
| Chapter 4 — The Outcasts and the Empire | Soulfire Bastion | Soulfire Bastion | Dungeon quest |
| Chapter 5 — Aid from an Oracle | The Sapphire Tablet | The Oracle's Abode | Side quest |
| Chapter 5 — Aid from an Oracle | Temporal Sanctum | The Temporal Sanctum | Dungeon quest |
| Chapter 7 — The Might of Gods | The Lance of Heorot | Farwood | Main quest |
| Chapter 7 — The Might of Gods | Liberating the Nomads | The Wengari Fortress | Side quest |
| Chapter 7 — The Might of Gods | A Heoborean Cure | Heoborea | Side quest |
| Chapter 8 — Lagon's Blessing | Liath's Tower | Liath's Road | Side quest |
| Chapter 9 — Sands of Majasa | Arjani, the Ruby Commander | Maj'elka Upper District | Side quest |
| Chapter 9 — Sands of Majasa | Desert Treasure | The Radiant Dunes | Side quest |
| Chapter 9 — Sands of Majasa | Harton's Idol | Soreth'ka | Side quest |
| Chapter 9 — Sands of Majasa | Too Greedily, Too Deep | The Oasis | Side quest |

Completed quests can display Idol Slot rewards in their reward panel.
Pay attention to the exact quest names. In particular, the Chapter 7 quest is Liberating the Nomads. Similar wording in an older checklist can make it appear that the quest is missing when the actual in-game name is different.
A simple no-dungeon route to all 20 squares
You can reach the maximum without using any dungeon quest. A straightforward route is to complete the first five ordinary campaign choices available through Chapter 5, then take all three qualifying Chapter 7 quests.
- Complete The Void Assault in Last Refuge Outskirts during Chapter 2.
- Pick up and finish An Ancient Hunt in the Council Chambers during Chapter 3.
- Complete The Admiral's Dreadnought at the Risen Lake during Chapter 4.
- Finish the side quest The Corrupted Lake in the same chapter.
- Complete The Sapphire Tablet from the Oracle's Abode during Chapter 5.
- Finish the main quest The Lance of Heorot in Farwood during Chapter 7.
- Complete Liberating the Nomads in the Wengari Fortress.
- Complete A Heoborean Cure in Heoborea.
That selection supplies eight qualifying rewards by Chapter 7. The precise order of the Chapter 7 side quests is less important than confirming that each reward registers on the World Map.
This route is useful when you do not already have the required dungeon access or simply want to keep campaign progression self-contained. It also leaves every Chapter 8 and Chapter 9 Idol Slot quest available as an alternative if you missed an earlier side quest.
Do not interpret this as eight mandatory quest names. Any listed dungeon quest can replace an ordinary campaign choice, and later Chapter 8 or Chapter 9 side quests can fill a missing reward. The only fixed goal is to reach the maximum shown by the in-game reward tracker.
Using dungeon quests as alternate rewards
Lightless Arbor, Soulfire Bastion, and Temporal Sanctum appear in the official Idol Slot quest list. Completing their associated quests can therefore reduce the number of ordinary campaign side quests you need.
The three dungeon alternatives are distributed across the early campaign chapters:
- Lightless Arbor is listed under Chapter 3.
- Soulfire Bastion is listed under Chapter 4.
- Temporal Sanctum is listed under Chapter 5.
Use them when they fit the route and access available to your character. They do not raise the maximum above 20 squares, and clearing an arbitrary dungeon without completing its listed quest is not a general Idol Slot unlock method.
If your only objective is the Idol Grid, compare the quests you have already completed with the full table before committing to a dungeon. A nearby campaign side quest may provide the same progression toward the cap with less backtracking.
How to check which rewards you still need
Open the World Map with M, which is the default binding. The bottom-left area shows how many of the maximum unlockable Passive Point and Idol Slot quest rewards that character has obtained. This is the reliable stopping condition because the game intentionally offers more qualifying quests than you need.
Use the map and quest log in this order:
- Open the World Map and read the Idol Slot reward counter in the bottom-left corner.
- If it is already at its maximum, stop searching for another reward quest. Your character has obtained all quest-based Idol Grid space.
- If the counter is incomplete, open the quest log on the left side of the map.
- Review the completed quests and compare their exact names with the 16 entries above.
- Choose an unfinished qualifying quest in an area or Era you can access.
- Click a quest to make the map display its relevant Era and location.
- Hover over quest icons in an area to identify their names.
- If the destination has an unlocked waypoint, right-click the area to travel there directly.
- Complete the quest, then reopen the World Map and confirm that the Idol Slot counter advanced.
Main quests use golden map markers, while side quests use silver markers. That distinction helps when looking for An Ancient Hunt, The Corrupted Lake, The Sapphire Tablet, or the later side quests after following only the golden story path.
The completed quest log is more useful than visually inspecting the grid alone. Idol Altars can change the grid's shape, so a different layout does not necessarily mean that quest progress is missing.
Recovering Idol Slots after entering Monoliths early
Entering the Monolith of Fate does not permanently lock you out of campaign reward quests. A high-level character can return to the campaign, use unlocked waypoints, and finish eligible quests that were skipped.
Start with the World Map counter instead of replaying whole chapters. If the counter is incomplete, identify specific missing names from the list. The later alternatives are especially useful when earlier side quests were bypassed:
- Liath's Tower provides a Chapter 8 option.
- Arjani, the Ruby Commander, Desert Treasure, Harton's Idol, and Too Greedily, Too Deep provide four Chapter 9 options.
- Any unfinished dungeon quest from the official list can also contribute.
Leveling in Monoliths by itself does not award the missing squares. Neither does collecting more Idol items. The item and its equipment space are separate: Idols can drop while the character still has an incomplete grid, but only qualifying quest rewards expand that grid.
Avoid completing every side quest blindly. First count the eligible quests already recorded as complete, then select only enough unfinished entries to fill the counter. This saves time on characters that skipped the story but already collected several rewards along the way.
What the 20-slot maximum means
The standard Idol area appears as a 5-by-5 window with the four corner squares and center square blocked, leaving 20 usable squares. Those blocked positions are part of the layout, not five missing quest rewards.

The standard Idol Grid layout has 20 usable squares and blocked positions.
Idols occupy different shapes, including 1-by-1, 1-by-2, 2-by-1, 1-by-3, 3-by-1, 1-by-4, 4-by-1, and 2-by-2. Unlocking all 20 squares does not guarantee that every combination will fit. You still need to arrange each Idol according to its dimensions and the shape of the available space.
The grid can also be changed by equipping an Idol Altar in the slot above it. An altar may create a different shape and introduce Refracted Slots. This changes how the available space is arranged and how equipped Idols interact with the grid, but it does not create an endless series of campaign unlock rewards.
When diagnosing a supposedly missing slot, separate three questions:
- Is the World Map Idol Slot reward counter at its maximum?
- Does the current Idol Altar change the expected grid shape?
- Is the apparent empty or blocked space simply unable to fit the Idol's dimensions?
If the reward counter is full, another campaign quest will not solve an Idol-fitting problem. Rearrange the Idols or inspect the equipped altar instead.
Common reasons an Idol Grid looks incomplete
Only the main story was completed
Only The Void Assault, The Admiral's Dreadnought, and The Lance of Heorot are main quests in the Idol Slot list. Completing the main story while ignoring silver side-quest markers therefore leaves the reward counter short. Add eligible side or dungeon quests until it reaches the maximum.
The character moved to Monoliths before finishing rewards
Monolith progress does not substitute for campaign reward quests. Return through the World Map, check completed quest names, and finish specific missing entries.
Twenty was mistaken for the quest requirement
Twenty is the number of usable Idol Grid squares. The quest list contains 16 alternatives, and the reward maximum is reached with eight qualifying completions. You should not search for twenty different Idol Slot quests.
Every listed quest was assumed to be mandatory
The surplus is intentional. It lets different campaign and dungeon routes reach the same maximum. Stop when the bottom-left World Map counter is full, even if several listed quests remain unfinished.
A blocked center or corner was mistaken for missing progress
The standard 5-by-5 layout leaves the center and four corners blocked. Those five squares are not additional rewards waiting to be unlocked. The remaining 20 squares are the normal maximum usable space.
The grid shape changed after equipping an Idol Altar
An Idol Altar can alter the grid layout. Remove the assumption that every completed character must display the same pattern, and use the World Map reward counter to verify campaign progress.
Final unlock checklist
Before leaving the campaign reward route, verify each point:
- The World Map's Idol Slot reward counter is at its maximum.
- You completed eight quests from the 16-entry list.
- At least five of those quests are side or dungeon quests, because only three eligible main quests exist.
- Your grid provides up to 20 usable squares, even if the layout contains blocked positions.
- Any unusual grid shape is checked against the equipped Idol Altar.
- You are not expecting Monolith levels, Idol drops, or unrelated quests to expand the grid.
Once those checks pass, the character has all quest-based Idol Slot capacity. Any remaining problem is about Idol dimensions, arrangement, class restrictions, or the current altar layout rather than another missing campaign reward.
